- Tribal Research Centre is based in Udhagamandalam, the capital of the Nilgiris district, and its aim is to develop strategies for the advancement of the indigenous community of Tamil Nadu. The centre hosts the Tribal Museum with the purpose to collect and preserve artefacts produced by the several indigenous communities of Tamil Nadu.

The department hosts several researchers working on South Indian epigraphy.
